Transitions
Use transitions to change between shots, bring a clip into view, or reuse a named effect. Choose a style in the Transitions library, apply it to the intended video clip, then adjust its timing in Properties.
Prepare the clips and choose the cut
- Add your shots to a video track. See Media for importing and adding files.
- Arrange the shots in order on the timeline. For a transition between two shots, place the second clip immediately after the first, with no empty gap. The join is the point where the first clip ends and the next begins.
- Click the incoming clip: the clip that begins at the join you want to change. Its Properties appear on the right.
- Click Transitions in the left tool rail. Keep the intended incoming clip selected while choosing a preset.
A transition belongs to the beginning of its incoming clip. When you move that clip, the transition follows it. A clip at the start of a track, or a clip after a gap, receives an entrance effect. The transition Properties identify the result as Entrance or Between clips.
Transitions change the picture. Use the clip's Audio controls for volume and sound fades; see Clip properties. A picture dissolve does not automatically create an audio fade.
Preview a style before applying it
- In Transitions, find a card under Essentials, Movement, Stylized, or My Creations.
- Click the body of the card. The player shows a repeating demonstration using Clip A and Clip B. This lets you compare styles without placing a transition on the timeline.
- Click another card to compare its demonstration.
- Click the player or its Close transition preview cross to return to your project. You can then apply the chosen card using the instructions below.
The card demonstration is a quick indication of the effect. Use the applied transition's Preview button to check its placement against your own shots, and review the exported video before sharing the finished edit.
Built-in transition catalog
The duration below is the starting value when you apply the card. You can change an applied transition afterward.
| Group | Card | Starting duration | Use it for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Essentials | Cut (none) | 0 seconds | An immediate change between shots, with no blend. Use Remove if you also want to clear an existing transition badge. |
| Essentials | Cross Dissolve | 0.6 seconds | A gradual blend from one shot into the next. |
| Essentials | Fade to Black | 0.8 seconds | A dip through black, useful for a pause or chapter change. |
| Essentials | Fade to White | 0.8 seconds | A dip through white for a bright change between shots. |
| Movement | Slide Left | 0.5 seconds | A leftward moving change; the incoming shot enters from the right. |
| Movement | Slide Up | 0.5 seconds | An upward moving change; the incoming shot enters from below. |
| Movement | Wipe Left | 0.5 seconds | A moving reveal whose boundary travels left across the picture. |
| Movement | Smooth Zoom | 0.6 seconds | A stylized moving blend, with a punch-in style demonstration. Check the finished movement in your export. |
| Stylized | Circle Open | 0.7 seconds | A circular reveal opening onto the next shot. |
| Stylized | Pixelize | 0.6 seconds | A pixelated change between shots. |
| Stylized | Blur In/Out | 2 seconds | A longer blurred change, or a blurred entrance when applied to the first clip. |
Apply one transition precisely
- Click the incoming video clip on the timeline.
- Open Transitions and find the style you want.
- Click Apply below that card. With the keyboard, Tab to that card's Apply button and press Enter.
- Look for the named transition badge at the selected clip's beginning. Its Properties show the transition name, its time, and whether it is an entrance or a change between clips.
- Click Preview in Properties to watch the result on your footage. Click Pause in the player controls when you have seen enough.
Without a selected video clip, Apply uses the cut nearest the playhead on V1 when that track is available. Selecting the incoming clip first gives you a clear target, especially in a project with several video tracks. If you select an audio clip, that does not choose a video track for the transition.
Applying another card to the same incoming clip replaces the style at that position. It does not pile several transition styles onto the same join. Use Undo if you replace the wrong one.
Drag a transition onto the timeline
- Open Transitions.
- Drag the body of a transition card into the intended video track.
- Release over the join you want to change. The effect attaches to the nearest clip beginning on that track.
- Check the badge and its Properties. If it landed on a nearby join, click Undo, select the intended incoming clip, and use the card's Apply button.
Use a video track containing clips. Dropping a card into empty timeline space does not create footage or an adjustable gap. You do not need to overlap the clips to make a transition; arrange the clips end to end.
Apply a style across a video track
- Click any video clip on the track whose cuts you want to change.
- Open Transitions and find the chosen card.
- Click All cuts under the card.
- Review the badges at the beginnings of the track's clips after the first. Each receives the chosen style and its starting duration. Existing styles at those positions are replaced.
- Click Undo once if you want to reverse that whole application.
The target track needs at least two clips. All cuts works on the chosen video track, so repeat the procedure for another video track if needed. Clips after a gap can receive entrance effects rather than a blend with the earlier shot.
Edit an applied transition
- Click its named badge on the timeline. Double-clicking the badge also opens its Properties. For keyboard selection, Tab to the badge and press Enter or Space.
- Read the name and At time at the top of Properties to confirm that you are editing the intended join.
- Change Duration or drag the slider immediately below it.
- Click Preview to check the new timing on your clips.
| Control | Meaning and action |
|---|---|
| Duration | The requested transition length in seconds. The editor accepts 0.1 to 4 seconds here. Enter a value such as 0.8, then press Enter or click outside the field. |
| Duration slider | Changes the same value. Drag it for a quick adjustment. With the slider focused, arrow keys adjust by 0.1 seconds, Page Up or Page Down by 1 second, and Home or End selects its minimum or maximum. |
| Apply to all | Copies this duration to every transition already in the project, including transitions on other tracks. Their styles stay as they are. This button does not create transitions at untouched cuts. |
| Preview | Moves playback to just before the transition and starts playing your project. |
| Remove | Removes the selected transition while keeping both clips. |
| Close transition properties | The cross closes the selection. The transition remains in place. |
The number field also has increase and decrease buttons. Arrow Up and Arrow Down change its value by 0.1 seconds; holding Shift with an arrow changes it by 1 second. Valid values update the picture as you edit. Use Undo to reverse an applied change; Escape clears an unfinished numeric entry rather than reversing a value that has already taken effect.
The gallery's All cuts and the inspector's Apply to all do different jobs: the first places a style on one track's cuts; the second copies a duration across existing transitions.
Create and reuse a described transition
- Open Transitions.
- Under Create with AI, click the field showing Describe it — e.g. slow fade to black.
- Enter a short description with one effect and, if wanted, a duration. Examples include “fade to black 1 second”, “slide right 0.8 seconds”, “wipe up 0.5 seconds”, “circle close”, or “blur 1.2 seconds”.
- Click Create or press Enter in the description field.
- Find the new named card under My Creations. Click it to preview, then use Apply, All cuts, or drag it onto a cut.
- Save your project after creating or applying the preset.
Descriptions can choose fades, black or white dips, directional slides and wipes, zoom or punch-style movement, opening or closing circles, pixel effects, blur, and dissolves. Keep the wording simple, and inspect the result instead of assuming a long description will produce several effects in sequence. A description without a duration starts at 0.7 seconds; use 0.1 to 4 seconds for a value you can also adjust in Properties.
You can describe those effects in any supported editor language, including German, Danish, Croatian, Serbian (Latin), Czech, Dutch, French, Spanish, Russian, and Ukrainian. A decimal comma works too: for example, “Überblendung zu Schwarz 0,8 Sekunden” or “переход в чёрный 0,8 секунды”. This helper recognizes effect, direction, color, and duration words; it does not carry out a general editing conversation. If a description gives an unexpected effect, simplify it to one effect and direction, then inspect the new card before applying it.
My Creations stays available to other projects in the same browser or desktop app on this device. A saved project also keeps its own transition presets. Save the project before changing devices or clearing browser data. Creating another card is the way to keep another named variant; there is no rename or delete command on these library cards.
Remove a transition and recover a mistake
- Select the transition badge, then click Remove in Properties.
- Alternatively, right-click the badge and choose Remove transition.
- With the transition selected and focus on the timeline, press Delete or use the timeline's Delete button.
- Click Undo or press Ctrl+Z to restore a removed transition or reverse an application. Click Redo or press Ctrl+Y to restore the change.
Click the timeline before using an editing shortcut after typing in a field. While a field has focus, Delete and Undo can act on its text. See Keyboard shortcuts for the editor's focus rules.
When the result is unexpected
- The effect is on the wrong track or cut.
- Undo the application. Select the incoming video clip on the intended track, then click the card's Apply button.
- The badge says Entrance.
- Check whether the clip is first on its track or follows a gap. For a blend between shots, move the preceding clip so its end meets this clip's beginning.
- A long transition looks shorter than its Duration value.
- Short neighboring clips limit the usable transition time. For a one-second blend, leave at least two seconds in each neighboring clip, or choose a shorter Duration. An entrance is also limited by the entering clip's length.
- The timing changed after trimming or moving a shot.
- Review the transition at the clip's new beginning. If the edit removed the join, apply the desired transition again at the new join.
- The music or voice does not fade with the picture.
- Select the audio-carrying clip and adjust Fade in or Fade out under Audio. Picture transitions and sound fades are separate choices.
